As many divers will know, Bau-Bau and the Wakatobi are remote areas in Indonesia, and whilst this makes your dive trip all the more exciting, it also means that you have to consider and plan how you are going to get here.

We are pleased to report that transportation to Bau-Bau and the Wakatobi is becoming easier and more efficient all the time. We will continue to update this page as new options become available so please check regularly.

You can now fly to Bau-Bau daily with:

Getting to Makassar

After arriving in either Jakarta, Bali or Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia) international airport, you can take a flight to Makassar. We recommend booking your flight online with Airasia or Lion Air.


Makassar – Bau-Bau
 
From Makasar, the next step is to get to Bau-Bau where we will meet you. There are a number of ways you can do this.

  • The easiest way is to take a direct flight from Makassar to Bau-Bau with Express Air or Lion Air. There are now 3 daily flights available (see details above).

  • Another option is to fly from Makassar to Kendari, there is a range of daily flights available, and then from Kendari to take the fast boat to Bau-Bau. There are 2 fast boats each day departing at 7am and 12 noon. The journey to Bau-Bau takes approximately 5 hours.

  • Another option is to take a PELNI ferry from Makassar to Bau-Bau, however the schedules for these boats is produced on a monthly basis, so it is difficult to plan on taking a PELNI boat as you will not know the schedule very far in advance.
 
Once in Bau-Bau you can enjoy many diving opportunities, and you may like to spend a few days here before moving onto Hoga Island in the Wakatobi Marine National Park.
 
Bau-Bau – Hoga
 
If you are planning go do diving in the Wakatobi Marine National Park it is necessary to travel from Bau-Bau to Wanci and then from Wanci to Hoga Island.

Bau-Bau to Hoga overnight boat

  • There is an overnight boat from Bau-Bau to Wanci which departs at 9pm every night, and arrives in Wanci at approximately 7am. You can then take the public speed boat from Wanci to Hoga Island which departs at approximately 9am each day, and takes approximately 2 hours.

  • Another option is to fly from Bau-Bau to the Wakatobi (Wanci). The flight only takes 20 minutes and there are 6 flights a week with Express Air (everyday except Mondays) departing at 10.15am. If you have little time this is a good option but bear in mind that passangers are only allowed to take 10kg of luggage with them as it is a small plane.
 
Return Journey
 
There are Express Air flights from the Wakatobi (Wanci) and Bau-Bau departing to Makassar and onwards to Jakarta and Surabaya every day except Mondays.
